I’ve been thinking – how do I get motivated to do the critical work of my business, even if they are tasks that I hate to do? Am I just a very lazy person? Or is my problem one of mindset, rather than one of motivation? Am I thinking about this in the correct way?
I am not only lazy in my business life. I am also lazy in my personal life. I struggle with getting my personal tasks done too. For example, I hate housework and I am always behind on one task or another. I hate laundry and loathe doing the dishes, but because I love my family, I try to get these tasks done. I am still not thrilled with the work, but I try to remember that I am doing it for my family, because I love them. It’s not for me.
So, is there a relationship between how I struggle in my personal life and how I avoid certain tasks in my business life? Do I have the same mindset as I have when I think about getting my domestic tasks done? Do I have a higher purpose that drives my motivation?
Best selling author, Simon Sinek, tells us to Start with Why. And this makes sense. To do something well demands we have a strong reason for doing it – a reason above just ourselves – a reason beyond the hated task itself. We must consciously tie the task to the why it’s important.
I think that rather than berating myself and my team for our laziness, we must change our mindset. I think that I must ensure that everyone in the company knows why our company exists – its higher purpose – so that we can do the things we hate to do, because we have a higher purpose.
What do you think?
